What to Do if You're in a Car Accident

Two Vehicle Accident

No one likes to think about being involved in a collision, but being prepared and knowing what to do after a car accident in Ontario makes all the difference. The experts at Pfaff Autoworks have put together this guide highlighting the steps to take if you are in a car accident.

Steps to Take if You’re in a Car Accident

Before we discuss what to do in a car accident, ensure that you always have your insurance ID, vehicle registration, and a first aid kit in your car. Other useful items to keep in your car include reflective triangles, safety warning devices, a pen, and a notepad.

If you were just in an accident, remaining calm is crucial. Here’s what to do after a car accident in Ontario:

  1. Turn on your hazard lights. If your vehicle is operable, and it’s safe to do so, move it off the road. Check for oncoming vehicles and place reflective triangles around your car to alert other drivers.
  2. When you’re safe, check on your passengers and other people involved in the accident. If there is an emergency (injuries, hit-and-run, fire, etc.), call 911 immediately. Get the officer’s information so you can request a police report.
  3. If there isn’t an emergency, call the local police for instructions, as they may differ depending on the situation and where you live.
  4. Exchange information with the other driver(s) in a safe place. Be sure to get their contact information, insurance company, policy number, license plate number, make, and model. If there were any witnesses to the accident, you should also get their information.
  5. If you can safely do so, take several pictures of the accident scene and any involved vehicles. Videos are also helpful. Write down any details of the incident, including the road conditions, date, time, and how it happened.
  6. Leaving the scene may be against the law, so stay put until you’ve notified authorities and obtained all necessary information. File a claim with your insurance company as soon as possible, regardless of whether you’re at fault.
