Accidents happen to everyone. When they do, there is a list of things you need to do if you're able. Pfaff Autoworks has put together this accident checklist for drivers around Markham and Vaughan, Ontario, who may need something to consult after an accident.

Stop and Assess the Situation

After an accident, it's important to stop your vehicle and examine the situation. Leaving the scene of an accident without exchanging information can cause legal issues.

Your safety is important. If it is safe, move your car to the side of the road, so it is out of traffic and is not at risk of another accident. If you can't move your vehicle, turn on your hazard lights.
Get Medical Attention if Needed

Check yourself and your passengers for injuries. If you, or someone else involved in the accident, are injured, call emergency services for help. When injured, it is best to stay in your vehicle until paramedics arrive.

Some injuries may present later, so it can be helpful to see a doctor even if you feel fine immediately after the accident. Emergency services can help you make this determination when they arrive.

Document Accident Details

If you are uninjured and it is safe, document the accident. Documentation can include the date, time, and location of the accident. It should also include photos of your vehicle and the other vehicle involved. If you have hit other objects, photograph those as well. You can use your cellphone or a camera if you have one.

Depending on the severity of the damage, you may be able to file a police report and receive their documentation as well.

Reach Out to Your Insurance Company

When you are able to, contact your insurance company. Some companies have an online claim portal or a phone number for accident claims. Your insurance will likely ask for any documentation you received, including the other driver's insurance information and photographs you may have taken.

Your insurance company will inform you of the next steps, including hiring a tow truck if needed, potential rental vehicles, and whatever else your policy involves.
Exchange Information With Everyone Involved

Exchange insurance information with the other driver at the scene (if more than one vehicle is involved). If the car was parked or there was no one else present, leave a note or reach out to authorities. If the damage is estimated, on-site, to likely be more than $2,000 or if anyone was injured, it's recommended to call the police anyway.

If pedestrians and other passengers are involved, get their information as well. This includes witnesses.
